"No Trigger, No Cry" 2002-2003, Oil on wood panel, 52.5" x 89" x 6"
The Rebus project is a body of work in two parts: six large, book-shaped paintings on three-dimensional wooden panels and three dozen small oil paintings on canvas. In the painting above, "No Trigger, No Cry," the visual organization mimes that of a book. The painting reads left page separate from right page, then left to right, top to bottom . Each page is a rebus for a celebrity and the titles weave together associations with both "hidden" people. In this example the title "No Trigger, No Cry," references Bob Marley (left)and Dale Evans (right).
The three dozen smaller paintings are collectively known as "Charades." Like the parlor game, each painting presents visual information which prompts an oral response. Here also, these paintings reference cultural figures such as Alberta Hunter and Joey Bishop (shown below).
Rebus paintings have been shown at the Weatherspoon Museum, North Carolina; the Selby Gallery at the Ringling School of Art and Design, Florida; the John Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco and the Wetterling Gallery in Stockholm. |
